How can we promote positive mental health in the workplace?

During my previous career of over 25 years working in businesses, I have worked in some really fun places, and I have worked in some places that felt like they sucked your soul away.

Almost all of us will have experienced at some point in their career working for a company that made work an unhappy place to be. There are a multitude of reasons for this, which I won’t go into here, but the point is that work made us or makes us unhappy.

So not only was work an unhappy place to be, that made us unhappy – but it began to affect us to the extent that we took this unhappiness home into our private lives.  Our mental health began to suffer.

Today, I was reviewing some training that I’d previously done, and I came across this quote from John Lennon that had been used in one of slides.

“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”

I think this quote is really apt for what we are discussing here today. We shouldn’t be unhappy, and we shouldn’t suffer, but we seem to accept this as part of being an adult and working.

I’m saying when we bring the joy back into the workplace – we become happier and more productive, and we then do not suffer poor mental health due to our work.

All well and good you may be saying, but how do we achieve this?
